Rangers step up pursuit of Bryan Reynolds as potential long-term successor to James Tavernier

Rangers have stepped up their search for a successor to James Tavernier, with Bryan Reynolds emerging as a serious target ahead of the summer transfer window.

The right-back, who currently plays for Belgian side Westerlo, has attracted interest from Ibrox after establishing himself as a regular in the Belgian top flight over the past three seasons.

Reynolds may not be a household name among Rangers supporters, but the 24-year-old has built an impressive body of work since leaving the United States. The defender previously spent time with Roma, although opportunities in Serie A were limited, before moving to Belgium in search of regular first-team football.

That decision has paid off, with Reynolds making more than 100 league appearances for Westerlo and developing into one of the club’s key players.

According to Belgian journalist David van den Broeck, Rangers have now registered a concrete interest in the American international and have already made contact with Westerlo regarding a potential transfer.

The seven-cap United States international is entering the final year of his contract, a situation that has reportedly left Westerlo open to selling him this summer rather than risk losing him for nothing in 12 months’ time.

That development could work in Rangers’ favour as they look to strengthen at right-back following Tavernier’s departure.

While several defenders have been linked with a move to Ibrox in recent weeks, Reynolds is the latest player to emerge as a genuine option, with Rangers seemingly narrowing their focus as recruitment plans gather pace.

A move would also fit the club’s wider strategy of recruiting players who can contribute immediately while still possessing resale value further down the line.

As for the financial side of any deal, Westerlo are understood to be seeking “a few million [Euros]” for the defender. Given his contract situation, however, the Belgian club are not in the strongest negotiating position.

For Rangers, securing a new right-back remains a priority. Tavernier’s exit at the end of last season brought an end to a lengthy and successful spell at Ibrox, leaving a significant gap in the squad.

Finding a suitable replacement will not be straightforward, but Reynolds appears to be a player firmly under consideration as Rangers continue shaping their plans for the new campaign.
