Rangers Eye Hampus Skoglund Deal Amid Tavernier Succession Plans

Rangers have opened talks over a potential move for Hammarby full-back Hampus Skoglund as the club steps up plans to reshape its squad ahead of the new season, according to reports.

The Ibrox side endured a frustrating campaign last term, finishing third in the Scottish Premiership and ending the season without silverware. A disappointing European run only added to the sense of underachievement, leaving manager Danny Rohl with plenty of work to do during the summer transfer window.

Strengthening the defence has quickly become one of the club’s main priorities. James Tavernier’s departure has left a significant gap at right-back, while loan spells for Nasser Djiga and Derek Cornelius have also come to an end, reducing the options available at the back.

As a result, Rangers have turned their attention to Skoglund. The 21-year-old has earned a strong reputation in Sweden, with the Hammarby defender widely regarded as one of the country’s brightest full-back prospects. Described as “dynamic” for his energy and attacking qualities, he is viewed as a player capable of making an immediate impact.

According to the report, Rangers have already opened discussions with the player’s representatives and have held more than one meeting in recent weeks. Those talks are understood to have been positive, highlighting the club’s serious interest in securing his signature.

Although Skoglund remains under contract with Hammarby until 2029 after signing a new deal last year, Rangers are believed to be optimistic about their chances of striking an agreement. The defender has also hinted that he would welcome the opportunity to test himself abroad, previously describing transfer speculation linking him with a move away as “fun”.

Rangers have already added Lawrence Shankland to strengthen their attacking options, but attention is now firmly focused on reinforcing the back line. With Max Aarons having returned to his parent club following the end of his loan spell, Dujon Sterling is currently the only recognised right-back in the squad.

Given Sterling’s injury record, bringing in further competition appears essential. If Rangers can reach an agreement for Skoglund, it could prove to be a shrewd piece of business and an important step in Rohl’s rebuilding project at Ibrox.
