Danny Rohl urges Rangers to pursue ‘top drawer’ transfer target

Rangers’ summer rebuild is beginning to gather momentum as Danny Rohl and the club’s recruitment department continue shaping plans for what is expected to be a defining transfer window at Ibrox.

Following a disappointing season that ended without a trophy, there is a growing sense that significant changes are on the horizon. The need for improvement has been acknowledged at every level of the club, with the focus firmly on building a squad capable of closing the gap on Celtic and restoring Rangers as genuine title contenders.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh has already described the coming months as a “summer of substantial change”, while Rohl has made no secret of his belief that fresh quality and stronger leadership are required throughout the squad.

The first major step has already been taken with the arrival of Lawrence Shankland. The Scotland international is expected to add goals and experience to Rangers’ frontline, but indications suggest the club’s business in attacking areas is far from complete.

A number of forwards have been linked with a move to Ibrox in recent weeks. Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt remains on Rangers’ radar amid uncertainty over his long-term future at Elland Road. The English forward impressed during a spell away from Leeds and is understood to be among several options being monitored by the club.

Rangers have also been credited with an interest in Tottenham Hotspur youngster Mikey Moore after his successful period working under Rohl. The club’s recruitment strategy appears focused on combining proven performers with emerging talent capable of developing into valuable assets over time.

That approach reflects the broader objective behind the summer rebuild. Rangers are looking to strengthen immediately while also laying the foundations for long-term success, a balance that is likely to influence much of their transfer activity in the weeks ahead.

Another name now attracting attention is Leeds United striker Joel Piroe.

According to TEAMtalk transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey, Rohl personally believes the Dutch forward would be an excellent addition to his squad.

Piroe has established himself as one of the Championship’s most dependable goalscorers over recent seasons. During spells with Swansea City and Leeds, he has consistently delivered in front of goal, building an impressive record of 73 goals in 179 appearances in England’s second tier.

His reputation as a clinical finisher makes him an attractive option for Rangers. While Shankland has already arrived, there is a belief that additional competition and depth are needed in attacking positions. TEAMtalk report that Rohl has identified Piroe as a player who could strengthen those options significantly.

Rangers’ struggles for consistency in front of goal were evident at key moments last season, and the addition of another proven scorer would address a clear weakness within the squad.

At 26, the ‘top drawer’ striker is entering what many would regard as the peak years of his career. Unlike some of the younger prospects linked with the club, Piroe would be expected to make an immediate contribution rather than require time to develop.

There are, however, obstacles to any potential deal. Piroe is also attracting interest from Birmingham City, Stoke City and Middlesbrough, while reports suggest Rangers are not actively pursuing a move at this stage.

Leeds remain in a strong position regarding the player’s future, and any transfer would need to make financial sense for all parties involved. Nevertheless, the existing relationship between the clubs through the 49ers ownership model could prove useful should discussions advance.

For now, a move remains speculative. Yet with Rohl reportedly viewing Piroe as an ideal fit for his system, it is a situation Rangers supporters will be watching closely as the summer transfer window unfolds.
