Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe moved to reassure supporters at the end of the season by reiterating the club’s commitment to investing in the squad. As he did the previous year, Marathe made it clear that the ownership group remains determined to back the team and provide the resources needed to compete at the highest level.
The 49ers have invested heavily since Leeds returned to the Championship, and that spending has played a major role in the club’s progress. Last summer alone saw significant funds committed to strengthening the squad, with the additions of Gabriel Gudmundsson, Anton Stach and Dominic Calvert-Lewin proving particularly important.
Many of the club’s new arrivals settled quickly and helped Leeds secure a respectable 14th-place finish in their first season back in the Premier League. However, there is a widespread feeling around Elland Road that further investment will be required if the club is to continue moving forward.
While Marathe has stressed the importance of improving the squad, he has also indicated that Leeds will take a measured approach in the transfer market. That is likely to mean player sales as well as arrivals, with the club keen to maintain a sensible financial balance.
Several members of the current squad have been linked with moves away. Max Wober, Isaac Schmidt and Joe Gelhardt are among those whose futures remain uncertain heading into the summer window.
Largie Ramazani is another player attracting interest. The Belgian winger spent last season on loan at Valencia and has been linked with a permanent move to the Spanish club following the end of his temporary spell.
Norwich City were also credited with an interest earlier this month. However, BBC Norfolk journalist Chris Reeve has since reported that there is currently no link between the Championship side and the Leeds winger, effectively ending speculation over a move to Carrow Road.
That leaves Valencia as the most prominent club reportedly monitoring the situation.
Ramazani arrived in England carrying a strong reputation and was regarded as one of the more exciting attacking signings made by Leeds during that transfer window. Injuries disrupted the early stages of his time at the club, limiting his opportunities to make an immediate impact.
When given a run of games later in the campaign, he showed flashes of his ability. Although his loan spell in Spain began slowly, he finished the season in encouraging form.
With Leeds lacking depth in wide areas, the 24-year-old could yet have an important role to play at Elland Road next season, despite the continued speculation surrounding his future.
