What had once looked like a promising challenge for the title unravelled dramatically during the closing weeks of the season, with the Light Blues suffering four successive defeats against Motherwell, Hearts, Celtic and Hibernian.

A convincing 5-2 victory over Falkirk on the final day offered little more than a positive footnote to an otherwise disappointing finish. By then, the damage had already been done, with Rangers ending the season ten points behind Celtic and facing difficult questions ahead of a crucial summer rebuild.

One weakness became impossible to ignore. Rangers repeatedly lost control of matches in midfield, allowing opponents to dictate possession and tempo during key encounters. While Nicolas Raskin and Tochi Chukwuani formed the preferred partnership in the centre of the park, the side lacked a genuine conductor capable of controlling games from deep.

The comparison with former Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara is unavoidable. During Steven Gerrard’s title-winning campaign, the Finland international was the driving force behind Rangers’ dominance. His ability to receive possession under pressure, retain the ball and keep attacks flowing provided the foundation for the club’s success.

Since Kamara’s departure to Leeds United in 2023, Rangers have struggled to replace that profile. No player in the current squad has come close to matching the level of influence he once provided.

That search may now lead Rangers to Motherwell midfielder Elliot Watt. Reports suggest the Ibrox club have already opened discussions over a potential move for the 26-year-old, who has emerged as one of the standout performers in the division this season.

Watt’s numbers underline his importance. He topped the Premiership for completed passes and touches while also ranking among the league’s most effective ball-winners. His performances have attracted widespread praise, with RangersJournal writer Kai Watson describing him as the “best midfielder in the league this season.”

With Motherwell reportedly valuing Watt at £3 million, Rangers could view the deal as a worthwhile investment. Following the arrival of Lawrence Shankland, securing Watt’s signature may be the next major step in Rohl’s efforts to build a side capable of reclaiming the Scottish title.
