Perri’s Leeds Future All But Finished After Crushing Latest Blow

Leeds United face a crucial summer as preparations continue behind the scenes for their return to the Premier League, with several major decisions still to be made regarding both arrivals and departures at Elland Road.

Strengthening the squad remains the priority, but the club are fully aware that significant improvements cannot be made without carefully balancing the books. Leeds are expected to invest heavily in key areas of the team, though sales will play an equally important role in shaping their summer business.

Chairman Paraag Marathe has already made it clear that Leeds must work within the Premier League’s new Squad Cost Ratio regulations, meaning the recruitment team will have to operate with discipline and precision throughout the window.

As a result, a number of players could be moved on in the coming months to free up space within both the squad and the wage bill. One player whose future now appears increasingly uncertain is goalkeeper Lucas Perri.

The Brazilian arrived from Lyon last summer with hopes of finally solving Leeds United’s long-standing issues between the posts. Perri was immediately trusted as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and started the campaign in that role.

However, a difficult run of performances, combined with several costly mistakes, saw him fall out of favour midway through the season. Karl Darlow eventually stepped in and retained his place for the remainder of the campaign.

Although Darlow’s current contract expires next month, Leeds are still expected to offer the experienced goalkeeper a new deal. More importantly, the club’s growing interest in SC Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek strongly points towards another new arrival being lined up this summer.

That development alone raises serious doubts over Perri’s long-term future at Elland Road.

Leeds are understood to want greater reliability and consistency in goal next season, particularly with the demands of Premier League football awaiting them. Their interest in Hornicek, along with several other goalkeepers, suggests the club are determined to recruit a stronger first-choice option.

Since losing his place in December, Perri has mainly been restricted to cup appearances while Darlow remained ahead of him in the pecking order.

Despite Darlow having his own difficult moments at times, Leeds believe the veteran would be more willing to accept a backup role behind a new signing than Perri.

The Brazilian, meanwhile, is thought to want regular first-team football if he remains at the club, making the possibility of him settling for a number two position increasingly unlikely.

Leeds would likely keep Perri as part of the squad if he accepted a reduced role, but as things stand, all signs are pointing towards a summer departure.
