There was a familiar sense of frustration etched across the face of David Moyes at full-time on Merseyside in December, a reminder that, despite signs of progress, work remains to be done if Everton are to move forward with any real conviction.
That work is already underway behind the scenes. Everton have positioned themselves at the front of the queue to sign Ben White from Arsenal this summer, with discussions having taken place, according to sources close to the north London club.
Defensive reinforcements are expected to be a priority. James Tarkowski is now into his thirties, while both Michael Keane and Seamus Coleman are approaching the end of their current deals. Add to that ongoing interest in Jarrad Branthwaite and uncertainty surrounding Nathan Patterson, and it is little surprise that Moyes is keen to reshape his back line.
Right-back, in particular, has emerged as a key area of focus, and White is understood to be high on the club’s list. Currently earning around £150,000 a week, the 28-year-old has found opportunities limited under Mikel Arteta, with Jurrien Timber preferred in that role. White has also slipped down the pecking order in central defence, with William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães and others ahead of him.
With two years remaining on his contract, his situation has inevitably attracted attention. Everton believe they can offer him something others may not — regular first-team football — and that has given them an early edge despite interest elsewhere in the Premier League.
Everton’s recruitment drive may not stop there. The club have also explored a move for Myles Lewis-Skelly as they look to provide competition for Vitalii Mykolenko at left-back. A lack of depth has forced makeshift solutions at times this season, something Moyes is keen to avoid going forward.
Securing both players would represent a significant statement. More importantly, it would address clear weaknesses — and offer Everton a defensive platform far better suited to the demands ahead.
