Danny Röhl Reveals What He Told Andrew Cavenagh During Rangers Transfer Talks

Danny Röhl has left Andrew Cavenagh in little doubt about what he expects from Rangers when the January transfer window opens, insisting decisive action is required if the club are to move forward.

Rangers edged past Motherwell with a 1–0 victory on Saturday evening, a result that leaves them nine points behind Hearts at the summit of the Scottish Premiership, with a game in hand. The win was secured midway through the second half when Thelo Aasgaard reacted quickest at the back post, tapping home after Calum Ward failed to hold Djeidi Gassama’s curling effort.

While the result provided a welcome boost, attention quickly turned to the bigger picture. Speaking after the match, Röhl confirmed he has already held discussions with owner Andrew Cavenagh as preparations intensify ahead of a crucial transfer window.

The German coach inherited a squad shaped by what many inside Ibrox acknowledge was a disastrous summer of recruitment. Russell Martin, Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart have all departed this season, paying the price for a window that left Rangers short of quality and balance.

That legacy has presented Röhl with a demanding task. Results have improved in patches, but the manager is well aware that this group requires reinforcement if Rangers are to sustain a title challenge. January, he believes, is an opportunity to reset.

After the Motherwell win, Röhl made his expectations clear, calling on the club to act with conviction rather than caution.

Röhl said: “I had a good meeting with Andrew Cavenagh and we are very clear. I think there is one guideline for me. Off the pitch we have to make brave and bold decisions.

“It should not be something between maybe, or maybe not. It’s a no or a yes – not between – if I think this is what I want to see from myself, but also from us as a club that we are brave enough to make strong decisions.”

Recruitment priorities are already emerging. Rangers are short of a reliable goalscorer, with Youssef Chermiti, Bojan Miovski and Danilo all struggling for consistency. A new left-back is also expected to be high on the agenda, alongside the need for greater creativity in midfield, where Jens Hjerto-Dahl has been mentioned as a possible target.

Whoever arrives will be under pressure to deliver immediately, as Rangers look to ensure January succeeds where the summer window so clearly failed.
