Danny Röhl Edges Closer to Rangers Exit as Wolfsburg Prepare Formal Move for Sheffield Wednesday Boss

The pressure surrounding Danny Röhl refuses to disappear, even after public backing from the Rangers hierarchy. Following a disastrous conclusion to the 2025-26 campaign, questions over the German coach’s long-term future at Ibrox continue to dominate discussion among supporters, with interest from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg adding yet another layer of uncertainty.

Röhl had been strongly tipped to leave Glasgow this summer after Rangers limped through the closing weeks of the season, ending the campaign without silverware and facing growing frustration from sections of the fanbase. Performances dipped badly at the worst possible moment, and many expected the club to consider a change in the dugout.

Instead, chairman Andrew Cavenagh moved quickly to calm speculation by publicly backing the manager and insisting the club remained committed to Röhl ahead of next season.

Despite that show of support, reports in Germany suggest Wolfsburg have not abandoned hopes of luring the Rangers boss back to the Bundesliga. Waz reported on 21 May that the German side still view Röhl as a serious candidate as they continue their search for a new manager.

The interest has been building for weeks, raising fears that Rangers could yet lose their manager before preparations for the new campaign fully begin.

At this stage, however, Röhl is understood to feel settled at Ibrox and is believed to be leaning towards staying in Glasgow despite continued enquiries from Germany. Wolfsburg’s uncertain position has also complicated matters as they battle to secure their Bundesliga status through the relegation play-offs.

Even if Röhl remains, significant challenges await him next season.

Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen recently told Football Insider that the Rangers boss risks losing the trust of parts of his dressing room following the fallout involving captain James Tavernier.

The defender claimed the manager had failed to honour assurances over his playing time during his final appearance at Ibrox, posting his frustrations publicly on social media.

Röhl has denied making any promises, insisting he simply acted in the best interests of the team. Still, the controversy has done little to ease tensions around the club heading into a crucial summer.
