Sutton blasts remarkable Rangers title claim after Ibrox verdict

Rangers find themselves firmly in the thick of a gripping Scottish Premiership title race, and Chris Sutton has now had his say on who he believes will come out on top.

The Ibrox side sit second, three points behind leaders Hearts, and are beginning to apply sustained pressure on Derek McInnes’ men. Celtic are a further three points back, albeit with a game in hand on the two sides above them, ensuring there is precious little margin for error as the season edges towards its decisive stretch.

Danny Rohl is attempting to steer Rangers to their first league crown since 2021, when Steven Gerrard’s side amassed a remarkable 102 points. When Rohl succeeded Russell Martin earlier in the campaign, few would have forecast such a revival. At that stage, Rangers were sixth in the table and 13 points adrift of Hearts, their campaign drifting and confidence fragile.

Since then, the German has overseen a transformation. Rangers have steadily chipped away at the deficit and, in the period following his appointment, have collected 10 more points than the current leaders. Momentum, at least on paper, appears to be with the men from Govan.

Yet Sutton is not convinced they are favourites. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Sutton was asked who the current favourites for the title were, and replied: “Hearts still, just.”

He also addressed the atmosphere around Ibrox as belief begins to grow. He said: “Rohl has talked in the last couple of weeks about the fans getting a little bit nervy and a little bit edgy at Ibrox.

“It’s because of the performances, and that they’ve closed the gap at the top. It’s going to be an incredible title race.”

The coming weeks may well shape the outcome. Rangers face all three of the other top-four sides before the first weekend of March, starting with a trip to Motherwell and followed by a potentially pivotal meeting with Hearts at Ibrox.
