Ange Postecoglou return to Celtic mooted as fans dream of second reign

Celtic appear to be heading into a summer defined more by transition than continuity. Martin O’Neill’s appointment was never framed as a long-term fix, and that reality continues to shape the mood around the club.

Inevitably, attention has turned towards what comes next. Few names carry the same weight with the Celtic support as Ange Postecoglou, whose previous tenure still looms large in the collective memory at Parkhead.

What gives the discussion greater substance is Postecoglou’s current situation. Since leaving Nottingham Forest, he has remained unattached and notably unhurried in seeking his next role. There has been no rush back into the dugout, no public courting of opportunities. That pause matters. It suggests reflection rather than retreat, and leaves the door open to possibilities that might otherwise be closed.

The memory of his arrival in 2021 remains sharp. Postecoglou inherited a fractured squad, reshaped it at pace and imposed a clear identity that quickly re-energised the club. While the circumstances now would differ, the need for renewed direction and momentum feels familiar.

Former defender Steven Caulker added fuel to the debate this week when discussing Postecoglou and figures within his circle, including Nick Montgomery.

He said: (talkSPORT), “I think he [Postecoglou] is just taking a break right now.

“They went into Forest and there was the expectation as they walked into a club that was playing European football, and they were going to have time.

“But without being given that time, it didn’t work out. It hasn’t worked out for Nottingham Forest either because they are still struggling down the bottom of the league under Dyche.

“I think he’s taking a breather and seeing what is next. Nick Montgomery has taken a job over here in Asia.

“But on that, it is good to see British coaches going abroad. It is good to see them making a name for themselves.”

Those remarks hardly rule Celtic out. If anything, they point towards a manager weighing his next move carefully. With Postecoglou available and Celtic seemingly braced for change, the conversation feels unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
