Rangers’ £12m Winter Spend Sparks Renewed Scottish Premiership Title Push

The mood inside Ibrox has shifted sharply over the past six months. What was once cautious optimism has hardened into something more tangible, driven by action rather than rhetoric. After last summer’s boardroom upheaval, Rangers’ so-called “New Era” is no longer a concept in development. It is being felt on the pitch, in the transfer market and across the Premiership.

According to a Scottish Mail on Sunday report, Rangers’ £12 million January spend has “put the ball in Rangers’ court” in the title race. In a league where mid-season spending is usually modest, the figure landed with force, underlining the intent of a board determined to close the gap at the top.

When American healthcare entrepreneur Andrew Cavenagh completed a 51 per cent takeover in May 2025, alongside 49ers Enterprises, he was clear about his thinking. “History doesn’t win matches,” he said at the time, pledging to back ambition with hard cash. This winter, that promise was honoured. As journalist Gary Keown observed, Cavenagh has “put his money where his mouth is,” sending a message that Rangers will no longer accept incremental progress.

The recruitment itself has been pointed. Rather than padding the squad, Rangers targeted technical quality and potential resale value. Tuur Rommens and Tochi Chukwuani arrived for a combined £7 million, adding pace, composure and energy to a midfield that had previously lacked invention. It was spending with a clear plan behind it.

On the touchline, Danny Röhl has given that plan momentum. Appointed in October, the German has overseen a rapid transformation, turning an uneven side into one with edge and intensity. Eleven wins from his first 14 league matches tell their own story. Last week’s 5–1 victory over Kilmarnock, after an uneasy opening period, showcased a team capable of overwhelming opponents when the tempo rises.

Röhl’s win rate now sits at 60 per cent, and his swift integration of new signings has accelerated Rangers’ surge. With the table tightening, the Premiership title race has evolved beyond a familiar two-horse narrative. Rangers have placed themselves firmly back in contention — and, crucially, on their own terms.
