Farke insists Leeds remain strong despite missing out on Jørgen Strand Larsen

Daniel Farke has moved quickly to dampen any sense of panic at Elland Road after a subdued January transfer window, insisting Leeds United remain well equipped to fight their way clear of relegation.

Leeds emerged from the deadline with only one new face, Facundo Buonanotte arriving on loan, despite sustained efforts to bolster the squad. The club’s most ambitious move came in the form of a £40m bid for striker Jørgen Strand Larsen, only for Crystal Palace to outmuscle them at the decisive moment. For supporters hoping for a late surge of reinforcements, it was a familiar frustration.

Behind the scenes, however, the picture was shaped largely by financial reality. Having invested heavily over the summer, Leeds were operating under tight Profit and Sustainability Rules, leaving little room for manoeuvre. Any deal for Strand Larsen would have required dipping into next season’s budget, a step the hierarchy were unwilling to take. Concerns remain over depth, particularly with Dominic Calvert-Lewin carrying the burden up front and limited cover at full-back following Jack Harrison’s loan move to Fiorentina.

Farke has chosen not to dwell on what might have been. Instead, he has publicly backed his current group, stressing unity between the coaching staff and the board. The Leeds manager was keen to frame the situation as one of trust rather than regret.

“He is not the best player in the world, we can still beat relegation without him, my squad has not got weaker,” Farke said when addressing the failure to land Strand Larsen. He made it clear that airing frustrations over missed signings would only serve to dent confidence at a critical stage of the season.

While acknowledging that every manager would welcome greater resources, Farke accepted the constraints placed upon him. His focus, he insisted, is on maximising what he has, not questioning the club’s long-term planning. Stability, in his view, is often more valuable than short-term fixes during the January window.

With a crucial clash against Nottingham Forest on the horizon, Leeds find themselves deep in a survival scrap. Farke’s message is unambiguous: the responsibility now lies with those already in the dressing room. The challenge is steep, but the manager believes belief, togetherness and discipline will prove just as important as any late transfer addition.
