Exclusive: Crystal Palace–Tottenham Swap Deal That Could Dominate January Transfers

The January transfer window is fast approaching, with Premier League clubs readying their chequebooks for what could be a defining period in the season.

With the title race still open, European places very much within reach for a crowded pack, and the relegation fight tighter than in recent years, there is a growing sense that this winter window could be busier than usual. Palace’s interest in Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson has gathered pace, with BBC Sport reporting that Spurs are ‘strongly considering selling’ the 24-year-old amid growing interest from Selhurst Park. Johnson enjoyed a bright start to the campaign, scoring in Spurs’ opening two league fixtures, but his influence has since waned. In recent weeks, he has even been left unused on the bench in Premier League matches.

With Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Dominic Solanke still to return for Thomas Frank’s side, there is a belief that Johnson no longer features prominently in the Dane’s long-term plans. As a result, Spurs are understood to be open to offers.

That situation could open the door to a creative solution. Tottenham are keen admirers of Palace striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta and could look to use the Eagles’ interest in Johnson as leverage. Mateta’s future at Selhurst Park remains uncertain, despite his importance to Oliver Glasner’s side.

Spurs have been linked with the France international in recent weeks, with the 28-year-old enjoying another prolific campaign and closing in on 50 goals across four seasons in south London. Football Insider reported earlier this month that the Lilywhites are ‘monitoring’ his unresolved contract situation, with Mateta tied to Palace until 2027 and talks yet to make significant progress.

With Solanke sidelined and Randal Kolo Muani still finding his feet, Spurs are thought to be planning a striker addition. A Premier League-proven option like Mateta would be attractive, and a potential swap involving Johnson could help Palace soften the blow of losing one of their most reliable scorers.
