Cruel Twist for Ex-Forest Midfielder Before Reunion with Former Club

Nottingham Forest oversaw another significant reshaping of their squad during the summer, with the lure of European football prompting both arrivals and departures. Continuity, however, has been in short supply this season. Forest have already worked under three different managers, a level of upheaval that has inevitably complicated matters for players trying to find rhythm and stability. Lewis O’Brien’s journey since leaving Forest has been a winding one. Signed for £10 million from Huddersfield in the summer of 2022, the midfielder struggled to establish himself, making just 14 Premier League appearances before being allowed to depart permanently in 2025. Loan spells in the United States, followed by stints at Middlesbrough and Swansea, eventually led to a fresh start with Wrexham, where he would have had one eye on an FA Cup reunion with his former club.

Instead, Friday night delivered a bitter blow. Wrexham’s 2-1 defeat to Swansea proved doubly damaging for O’Brien, who lasted only a few minutes before dislocating his shoulder and injuring his knee following a robust challenge from Ethan Galbraith. Phil Parkinson confirmed after the match that O’Brien would now be sidelined for a period, all but ending his hopes of featuring against Forest in the cup.

It is a frustrating turn for a player many Forest supporters had once been excited about, arriving from beaten play-off finalists Huddersfield with expectations of making a real impact.

Forest’s own priorities this season may soften the disappointment of his absence. Last year, the Reds were in fine Premier League form when the FA Cup came around and pushed on to the semi-finals, losing narrowly to Manchester City in a competition eventually won by Crystal Palace. This time, with league concerns mounting and European commitments to juggle, a weakened side could travel to Wrexham for the third-round tie.

That scenario may hand the Red Dragons a rare opportunity. O’Brien, watching from the stands, will simply hope to be fit again should Wrexham progress and the story extend beyond one painful night.
