Future Madrid or Barcelona star? Forest defender emerging as £100m prospect.

Transfer fees have been climbing steadily for years, but the market truly shifted in 2017 when Neymar joined Paris Saint-Germain for a staggering €222m. Since then, the question has not been whether another barrier will fall, but which position will be next. Attackers and midfielders have already tested the limits. Now, attention is turning to defence, and Nottingham Forest’s Murillo is increasingly being discussed as a potential trailblazer.

Signed in 2023, the Brazilian does not fit the traditional mould of an English centre-back. Strongly built yet deceptively quick, Murillo combines physical authority with technical finesse. His left foot allows him to switch play with ease, while his confidence on the ball reflects his South American roots rather than the old-school “head it and kick it” stereotype. Despite arriving with limited senior experience, the 23-year-old has rapidly become a Premier League regular, closing in on 80 appearances and sampling European football in the Europa League. International recognition has followed, and a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup is firmly in his sights.

That progress has inevitably fuelled transfer speculation. Former Forest striker Marlon Harewood believes such conversations are a sign of health at the City Ground. Asked whether Murillo could end up at Barcelona or Real Madrid, he told GOAL: “Yeah, maybe. It’s all talked about. It’s good we are having this conversation about Forest… It happens in football. It means they are doing really well at the club.”

Harewood also addressed the growing talk of nine-figure fees for defenders, adding: “We have seen defenders go for big money… He is a top-class player, it’s just hard to put a price tag on him like that.”

Other Forest legends echo that view. Stan Collymore suggested Murillo “may well go on to become the first £100m defender”, while Stuart Pearce praised his intelligence and composure, noting: “Murillo is a wonderful talent and really important they keep hold of him.”

Forest have secured Murillo on a contract until 2029, strengthening their hand. Whether that proves enough in the face of elite interest remains one of the Premier League’s most intriguing subplots.
